Today, Samsung is introducing a new addition to its SmartThings ecosystem. This device, the Galaxy SmartTag, is designed to help you locate your items, wherever they are.
For example, if you lose your keys or bag, you can easily locate them with the help of the Galaxy SmartTag and your smartphone. Using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), the tag emits a sound when it is close to your phone. In this article, we will discuss about Interview Samsung Fastcompany VP Jaeyeon Galaxy.
How it works
During our Interview Samsung Fastcompany VP Jaeyeon Galaxywe were able to learn more about how the tag works. We spoke with HanJun Ryu, Samsung’s head of product marketing for its SmartThings line of devices, and he gave us a few examples of the things that you might be able to use it for.
Using a SmartTag with your smartphone is pretty simple, and once you’ve got it hooked up to the app you can then start to see what’s around you and where you’re at. The app will also show you the current location of any nearby tags so you can see if you can track them down.
To get started with the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag, you first need to make sure that you have the latest version of the Samsung SmartThings app installed on your phone. The app will then launch a screen where you can add the SmartTag.
Once you’ve added the device, it will then start to detect other devices that are connected to your smartphone. This will include other Galaxy users that are within Bluetooth range and it’ll also check if you have other Samsung SmartThings devices.
It’s worth noting that this will work across all Android devices, not just those running on Samsung’s own software. This is because a lot of other companies that make smart devices have started to build their own networks, so it’s not unusual for them to support the same technology.
There’s one big problem with the SmartTag system though; it depends on a massive number of Samsung phone owners to help create a robust locator network. This is why Apple’s AirTags and Tiles are much more popular – because they’re not dependent on the millions of users that have the Tile app.
The downside to this is that you’ll only be able to find your tag via other Samsung phone owners or their friends who have the app, so it’s not quite as robust as a Tile-based system – although you do have the added benefit of being able to search for the device on the map.
Why it is important
Whether you’re losing keys, attaching your runaway dog’s collar or just want to keep your belongings safe from theft, a Galaxy SmartTag is the perfect device. It can help you track your lost things with the tap of a button, and it works just as well when it’s on your keyring as when it’s tucked away in your luggage.
The tag uses Bluetooth Low Energy to connect to your smartphone, where it will be tracked through Samsung’s SmartThings Find service in the SmartThings app. When it’s paired, it will emit a signal that other Galaxy devices with the SmartThings app can pick up, which will show its last recorded location on a map.
If it’s out of range, the tag will send you a notification with a toggle to turn on nearby scanning for your item, which allows other Galaxy devices to anonymously locate and let you know where it is. In theory, this is an excellent way to track your stuff if you’ve lost it somewhere, though the tracking effectiveness will depend on how many other Samsung smartphones are in your area and the strength of the Bluetooth signals that the tag can detect.
There’s also a neat augmented reality feature on more recent Samsung devices, which overlays precise navigation data via UWB onto your phone’s screen. That means if your phone has AR you’ll be able to see your lost item in the same place on the screen where it is, so you can easily spot it.
While there are other competing options out there, it’s hard to ignore the Galaxy SmartTag+’s advanced capabilities. It’s a direct rival to Tile’s trackers, and it preempts the arrival of Apple’s AirTags (which have yet to be announced).
But, while it may be worth paying for it if you use Samsung’s ecosystem or if you’re heavily invested in it already, it’s still a bit of a stretch for non-Samsung users, as the UWB features only work with more recent Galaxy smartphones. That’s a real con for those who might have a Pixel or OnePlus in their pocket, and you won’t be able to control any smart home devices that have been enabled with this device unless they are Galaxy-compatible.
How it can be used
The Samsung Galaxy SmartTag is a wireless, Bluetooth based key finder and object tracker that can be attached to keys, wallets, luggage and even pets (the tag’s name is Galaxy Paw). It is compatible with the company’s SmartThings home automation system and lets you turn on or off your smart lights or plugs with a press of a button.

In addition to being a smart device, it also has some clever gimmicks up its sleeve such as the ability to display live weather reports and news about nearby events. Using the app, you can also set up notifications for your favorite TV shows and music channels.
Lastly, the Galaxy SmartTag has an impressive battery life of about a year. Its long lasting batteries can also be refilled with standard water bottles. The company is also looking to add a new feature called the “Galaxy Pet Monitor,” which will allow owners to track their pets’ whereabouts and notify their humans of any issues that may arise.
What is the future of the product?
Having a tracker attached to your phone, keys, or anything else that you want to keep an eye on is a great idea.
